Oculus Quest 2 Review: Is It Worth Buying?

Oculus Quest 2 is a second-generation VR device that is geared towards both beginners and experts. People say that it is one of the best VR devices currently in the market.

Or is it?

What I want to find out today is if it is worth buying. After all, it has a huge price tag. The good thing about Oculus Quest 2 is that it has geared away from wires.

Many VR devices today still require a lot of fuss—you need wires and a lot of connectivity devices.

This one doesn’t need all that.

What is the Oculus Quest 2?

Oculus Quest 2 — Advanced All-In-One Virtual Reality Headset — 256 GB

The Oculus Quest 2 is a VR headset. It should not be confused with other Oculus products. What makes the Quest 2 different is that it is a standalone VR headset, and it is mobile.

What does this mean?

It means that you do not have to tether it with a PC. It does not need external sensors. Many VR devices today still need a PC or a console. For example, some VR devices need to be connected with a PlayStation console.

What this means is that these VR devices mainly function as screens and controllers. However, they do not have their own processors and they cannot run their own games.

Quest 2 has its own processor. It uses four cameras on the headset. What they do is track your computer vision. This version has a faster processor, higher screen resolution, and even larger storage options.

So, what comes in the box?

If you buy the package, you will get the following:

  • VR Headset
  • Charging cable
  • Two Touch Controllers
  • Two AA batteries
  • Power adapter
  • Glass spacer

If you want, you can also buy a carrying case, but you need to buy it separately.

Oculus did a good job at this one. Although it is similar to its predecessor, the company nailed this one. this is a really immersive VR headset with no need for cables. PC tethering is an option. If you do this, you will have a fully comprehensive VR system.

Oculus Quest 2 Product Design

Oculus Quest 2 — Advanced All-In-One Virtual Reality Headset — 256 GB

This one is just a bit smaller than its predecessor as such, it is also lighter. Its weight is only 17.7 ounces, and the overall measurement is 4.0 x 7.5 x 5.6 inches. It is made of a smooth plastic chassis, and it also has a foam eye mask behind it.

On the left side, you will find a USB-C port, along with a 3.5 mm jack for headphones. The right side is where you will find the home and power buttons. It also has an LED indicator and volume control.

What people love about the product is that you can remove the eye mask so you can adjust the lenses. It has a separator so you can lift the headset and then use it with the glasses.

For the headband, it has a 3-point elastic wrap that keeps it snug on your head. The top strap is what connects that headset to some hook-and-loop fasteners that allow you to adjust it according to your own comfort.

Oculus Quest 2 Controllers

The package comes with two motion controllers. The company redesigned the controllers. They still have rounded handles and there is a ring at the top. The main triggers are within the reach of your index and middle fingers.

At the top, there is a flatbed that is circular, and it holds the other controls. For this version, these areas are larger, and they added a bare sport where you can rest your thumbs if you are not using the analog stick.

This new design makes it feel big in your hands. They are thick but it has an advantage: it is easier to hold them and grip them tightly.

Oculus Quest 2 Features

Oculus Quest 2 — Advanced All-In-One Virtual Reality Headset — 256 GB

Now, let us take a look at the cool features of this new gadget. From here, we should be able to decide whether it is worth buying or not.

Upgraded hardware – the Oculus Quest 2 uses Snapdragon 865-derived XR2. It is an impressive processor, and phones that have the same chipset sell for about $1,000. This new processor allows the device to get boosted performance compared to the original one. On top of this, the device gets an additional 2 gigabytes of RAM. It now has a total of 6GB RAM processing power.

Awesome display – the display also received a major upgrade. Now, gamers can experience 1920 x 1832 pixels of graphic quality for each eye. It has a refresh rate of 72Hz and we are expecting that support for 90Hz is coming soon.

Great performance – what makes this device awesome is that the maker nailed the accuracy of head tracking. It is highly accurate. The headset has four cameras that constantly scan your area. As such, it has four points or bases to track your position. This helps provide the machine with an accurate internal sensor orientation.

Overall, this version is a beefed-up upgrade compared to the original one. As far as I am concerned, this is worth the money.

How does the Oculus Quest 2 work?

Despite the VR system being stand-alone, it is not a console game. It is a headset that allows you to experience games in virtual reality. It still needs a set-up.

Here are the things that you need:

  • A computer with Windows 7 to 10 operating system
  • If using a MAC, it has to be macOS 10.10 (x86 only)
  • 2.0+ GHz processor
  • 2.0 GB RAM

This product also comes with Oculus Link. It is the system that connects your VR headset with your gaming PC. To make the Oculus Link work, your computer must be compatible.

Here are the things that you need:

  • A processor that is Intel i5-4590/AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or greater
  • A powerful GPU (video card)
  • 8GB of system memory or RAM
  • Windows 10 operating system
  • 1 USB port

You need to install the Oculus PC software to get started. And by the way, you need a Facebook account if you want to use Oculus Quest 2.

It is a requirement. Without it, you cannot access the Oculus Store. From there, you will be setting up your VR profile, adjust your privacy settings, and also create your Oculus store PIN.

So, I just want to reiterate that this will not work without a computer. It is not like a console device where you can install games in it.

The way it works is that you install the game on your computer, and then the VR device is going to be your “play area.” The computer will transmit a signal to your VR, and you will move your hands to play a game. That movement will get transported to your PC and vice versa.

Summary: Oculus Quest 2 Review

Overall, I am impressed with this product. The Oculus Quest 2 gives you easy access to everything that is virtual. It provides you with an experience that you will never forget.

I can say that it is definitely worth your money and your time. It is capable of delivering a high-quality VR experience. The best thing that I love about it is that it is easy to set up.

Also, there is wide support for this product. You have a wide list of options as far as apps and games are concerned.
